Background
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. However, the risk of breast cancer increases with age, and it has a significant impact on women’s quality of life (QoL). Estrogen is the most commonly detected hormone in breast cancer and it can cause a range of physical, psychological, and emotional side effects, including depression, anxiety, and loss of interest. Arimidex, a specific estrogen receptor modulator, has been shown to be effective in treating breast cancer, but it is often more expensive than tamoxifen and other aromatase inhibitors. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of arimidex for reducing the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women who had received tamoxifen or estrogen treatment.
Method
This was a retrospective study of women who received tamoxifen or estrogen treatment for five years. This was a case-control study involving 546 women with breast cancer. These women were randomly assigned to receive either tamoxifen or estrogen. We also evaluated the patients’ QoL, and the occurrence of breast cancer, using the Hamilton-Norwood-Hamilton Index (HA-OHI) as a QoL predictor. We used the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) as a QoL predictor to assess the relationship of the QoL to breast cancer. The primary outcome was the occurrence of breast cancer in the patients who had received tamoxifen.
Results
Overall, women who received arimidex for five years had a reduced risk of breast cancer of 0.78% compared to women who received tamoxifen. However, the risk of breast cancer was still 0.78% (95% CI, 0.53-1.23%) for those who received tamoxifen and 0.77% (95% CI, 0.53-1.13%) for those who received estrogen. We observed that women who received tamoxifen and estrogen had a lower risk of breast cancer in the 5 years after the start of treatment (0.75% vs. 0.70%, respectively).
Conclusions
The results of this study suggest that the risk of breast cancer was still present in the 5 years after starting treatment. Arimidex may be an effective treatment option for postmenopausal women who had received tamoxifen or estrogen treatment.
